| Oct. 21, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Stepping out of the front of the box? The batter's box has plenty of room. Move back if you need more room forward. Batter's Box: Batter's box is 3 feet wide by 7 feet deep. Batter must have some portion of both feet inside of the batter's box when the windup / delivery begins. Any portion of the foot touching the chalk / lines is considered "in" the box. On the swing, the batter is considered "out of the box" when he has one foot completely on the ground, completely outside of the batter's box when contact is made. As long as you have not put your foot down on the ground outside the box prior to making contact, you are considered still in the box. In other words, if you foot is in the air, make contact and ball way, then foot hits outside box, you are not out. Also, any player who intentionally obliterates the chalk line can be called out and ejected from the games. |
| Sept. 14, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Losing could be beneficial I was looking over the brackets in the 60 AAA. If you are a low seed in one of the two pods, such as #16, if you win, then you have to play the #1. Now, if you lose to the #1 seed and drop down to the loser bracket and lose, you are out on Friday. However, if you lose that first game and then drop to the loser bracket, you only have one more game and no matter how you do, you will get at least one game on Saturday. Your team will be less tired from playing less games and might even win two or three the next day on Saturday. Unless my team suddenly plays way over their heads, we don't have a chance to win the 60 AAA. We have a chance to win a few, but I will be missing some players on Thursday due to work obligations, so pool play will be a challenge. I know bracketing is tough and wouldn't want to do it, but here is a case where the loser is rewarded. |
| Sept. 14, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: runner intentionally get hit by ball If the runner intentionally interferes, the ball is dead, then the most advanced runner and the runner that interfered are out on a double play. So the runners that were on 2nd and 1st at the time of the pitch would be out. This would be an umpire judgement call to whether it was intentional or not. If not intentional, then the ball is dead, the runner struck is out and the batter is awarded 1st base. any runner forced to move up because of the award would get one base. In this case the batter would end up on first, the runner on first on second and the runner who was on second that got stuck off the base is out. My advice is to read the rule book. Many questions can be answered in doing so. |
| Aug. 22, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: commitment line stepover standoff I saw a funny thing happen at TOC one year. A team sent two runners home (both past third at same time but neither had scored or crossed commit line yet) and there was a throw to the plate. The first runner crossed the commit line while the catcher had the ball and standing on the mat. He was properly called out. The catcher then saw the second runner still coming, but left the mat and ran to tag the runner prior to the runner crossing the commit line. The catcher tags the runner just after he crossed the commit line.The umpire called him out. The offensive team protested and the second runner was declared safe and scored. What was strange, I think this guy would have kept running so if the catcher just stood there on the mat he could have gotten a double play. This same defensive team in another game later had a guy get a walk and then let their courtesy runner get on first without him ever touching the bag. There was an appeal and the guy was called out. Just a funny story on how some teams don't know the rules. |
| Aug. 22, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Proper Appeal There are two ways to make an appeal: First a live ball appeal: Throw to the base you want to make the appeal at, tell the umpire which runner and what you are appealing. Second a dead ball appeal: This is after the umpire has called time. Wait until the umpire puts ball back in play (tells or signals the pitcher to pitch). Tell umpire what base you are appealing, which runner and what you are appealing. (EX: I am appealing the runner who was on first for missing second base). You don't need to throw to the base. There are misc types of appeals like a person batting out of order, and courtesy runner violations. Batting out of order can only be appealed after the person who is batting out of order has completed his at bat. If you say something before that, then the person who was supposed to bat can assume his proper position in the batters box and he assumes the count of the wrong batter. Regarding a courtesy runner, you must wait until wrong runner gets on base and then appeal. Once he steps on, there is no going back. |

| July 3, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: WORLDS AND NEW 4 DAY FORMAT In most of the different classifications, unless you are winning, you only played two days because you were eliminated. When it was a three day, getting to Sunday was usually an accomplishment in itself (Our team placed 2nd at worlds last year). I am just wondering with this new 4 day format if some of the larger groups will still have teams eliminated in two days. Most of my guys fly Southwest so they can change flights if necessary. This year, we have a player getting married in Vegas after the tournament and some guys are planning to stay anyway. The only issue becomes whether or not a person gets stuck with another hotel night if they don't need it. The three day, they stayed anyway, but a team that is gone two days early, may want to hit the road. Las Vegas is not my ideal vacation, although I do get to spend some time with my dad and play some golf which makes it worth it to me. |

Some locations require two because of the amount of team playing at that location or the distance between fields. Each field usually has a UIC (umpire in chief). These individuals are there to settle roster disputes and protests if they occur. They don't have time to send for director from an another location for these incidents. I am glad they are there because it makes things go a lot smoother. |

This actually happened. Line drive hits pitchers glove over his head and carries to outfield. Runner was standing on second when ball was first touched. Runner takes off. The ball is caught and the defense appealed the runner leaving too soon. They lost the appeal because the runner was on base at the first touch of a live ball by the defense. |
| April 30, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Runner's right to the base This is an umpire judgement call. I umpire and rarely has that ever happened. When it did occur, The runner did not move from his original position on the base and that was what I was looking for at that time. The only time this happened when I observed it, the fielder caught the ball anyway. The problem I have is that the verbal part of the interference is not called. I have heard players on the offense calling for the ball as though they are going to catch it or yelling to have the defense throw it to another base. The umpire did nothing even though he acknowledged hearing it. I have called players out twice for verbal interference. This should be addressed, because it happens more times than you may think. |

| April 18, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 1-1 count and new ball I umpire USSSA. When they got rid of the courtesy foul, more guys went up the middle. Some pitchers have even been carted off to the hospital. USSSA then had to change to the middle rule. If a line drive hit the pitcher in the pitching area, it is an out. 2nd offense is a player ejection and 3rd is a forfeit. Needless to say, balls hit at the pitcher decreased. As soon as a few pitchers ride off in an ambulance because of more middle hits, expect this rule to change. Until then I am glad I am not on the mound. I think it is mostly major and major plus guys that want this 1-1. They rarely got in 7. AA and AAA usually get in 7. In the games we won at the Texas State Championships, we averaged 24 runs a game. We made it to the championship game through the losers bracket only to run out of gas. That game went 7 automatically and wish we could have finished with less at that point in the tournament. I can adapt to the 1-1, but I liked senior ball for it's slower pace. Maybe if more people contributed to the survey, things would have been different. For now, I will live with it, because it is the rule. |

If SSUSA wants to become like another organization, then I am starting to hear the golf course calling my name. What speeds up the game is the run limits per inning. If you take that away, 7 innings will become a dream. |

We still had one game only go 6 innings. Our Team had 50 Base on Balls over 9 games. One player had 10 and he doesn't get the many usually in a season. Last year we usually went 7 innings in most of our games. We usually don't make it 7 innings in two or three for the whole year. I liked the old way better. Pitchers could be more refined on pitching instead of serving up meat pitches. The new ball hasn't showed up yet. |

| March 27, 2018 txnighttrain | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Foul Tip vs Foul Ball Rule 1.29 Foul Tip: A foul tip is a batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head, to the catcher's hand(s) or glove and is legally caught by the catcher. NOTE: Any batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head to any part of the catcher's body or equipment other than the hand(s) or glove is a foul ball and a dead ball. EFFECT: The ball is dead on all foul tips and the batter is out if it is the third strike. Since we have the 1-1 count in the 50-55-60 age brackets now with a courtesy foul, this rule is more likely to come into play. This would mean that a player with two strikes and then has a foul tip would be out since a foul tip (which means it fits the above definition) is not a foul ball. Staff please correct me if this is wrong. |

Since ball is dead, and based on this rule and the the use of a CR, as long as the batter made it to first, a CR could take over. |
