injured player
Dave, can I get a ruling on the injured player rule

scenario...batter injures himself swinging and fouling off the 1st pitch and is unable to continue play..the team is batting 15 and has no subs.. I know that if he was injured running out a base hit he could get a courtesy runner and then be out on just his next turn at bat...but since he never able to complete his turn at bat and was called out would that count as the 1 time or would he be called out again the next time thru the line up Thx.

From what I remember: he is at bat from how I read this and get 'injured', That I'd think is a turn at bat, he was in the lineup and if he cannot bat next time up, with no subs he is out if the other team notices him missing and challenges it before next pitch.

B.J. ... Tough circumstance to be in, but we would rule that he is out for his failure to complete his at bat when he was injured ... Additionally, he would be out in his next at bat pursuant to Rulebook § 4.4C. at page 24, which states in part: "..If the player leaves for any reason other than ejection, an out shall be recorded only on the player's first subsequent at bat.." [Bold emphasis added] ...

With the lack of a substitute, this is a form of the short handed rule as it relates to offense ...Since he began, but was unable to complete, the injury at bat, that stands on its own and he would also be out the next time, the "first subsequent at bat" ... Simple analysis: The unfinished current injury at bat CANNOT also be the first subsequent at bat ...

Knowing the current at bat will result in an out, would it be improper to just finish that at bat without swinging, hoping for a walk?

Gavin5 ... With the luxury of "20-20 hindsight", that's probably the smart move ... Batter injury while still at bat is a rare occurrence ... But not being there and not knowing the severity of the injury or anything about the game situation, all we can do is suggest the ruling and hopefully it's instructional in some manner for the future ...

Saw an older player break his hip on his swing. He was sprawled across the plate for 20-25 minutes until paramedics came with stretcher. Pretty hard to try for a walk when the plate is covered by the player. Unusual situation, but so is any player injuring himself and unable to continue play.

I have pulled a muscle in my back on a swing and not able to continue to field or run; have seen players pull already strained hamstrings; can imagine other muscle/tendon pulls while at bat, but unlikely to not be able to even get to first for a CR, or not able to stay in game as hitter in next turn at bat and hope for a walk then. Breaking a hip is rare and truly does not allow a player to continue in the game. One of the reasons our manager always wisely lists himself as a sub but subbed in only one game in the past season when everyone else was batting and a player pulled a quad.

SSUSA Staff...what are the rules if player is ejected?

Just wondering if getting ejected on purpose (hey Blue...F*&6 You) is a viable option here... :-)

If the player is ejected and there is no substitute available, his spot in the batting order is an out EVERY time it comes around ... That's not normally a viable option, even for you!

Unless a sub is available replace an ejected player it's an out each time that spot comes up.
