Reebok Barrage update
Guys,
The second batch of Barrages are just in now. Reebok tweaked the bonding system that caused some early failures in the 26 and 27 ounce models to help with the durability. If you have questions feel free to contact me.

Since I am going to the TOC this week I am not testing any new bats other than the Special TOC limited edition Miken bat I will post info on that bat later.
As for the Barrages let me clear up a couple of questions:

1.Contrary to misinformed people, the Barrage does NOT carry a batch number on it at this time. The only number you see on it is the MODEL number which at this point is the Same number on every bat regardless of the batch.
2. How do you know it's the second batch?
A. I sold every first batch I had.
B. Reebok just started shipping the second batch and they told me it's the second batch.
C. I post correct information as given to me by the company producing the bat.
I will tell you guys that are MeLee and Barrage users....reebok is only producing a small amount of both. Alot of people are sold out already on the Melees and they just came in. There won't be any more Melees made until at least the end of March so....if you want to use a reebok bat this year you might want to get one while you can.

I bought a 27oz Reebok Barrage Senior bat and I like it.

Since I bought it last year, I can only assume that it is a first batch model bat.

I want to buy a second batch bat but I WANT TO BE SURE I'm getting what I'm paying for. Words and promises just don't make me feel very comfortable with a purchase at this time.

There must be some proof of the batch the bat was manufactured.

How can the customer really know what they are getting?

I am not asking for proof in writing, but that would be nice.

TRUST, BUT VERIFY!!!

QUESTION:

Since the 2nd batch is a changed formula, it is a different bat. Does that mean it has to be retested and approved by SSUSA and added to the 2014 list of approved bats?????

If it does, it must have some type of code or serial number in order to test legality. If the 2nd batch is declared illegal, the TDs need to be able to identify them at tournaments.

No it doesn't need to be retested. It was a manufacturing defect and it passed testing numerous times.

By reading your responses on this thread I can only come to one conclusion. That conclusion is that since you can't tell the difference between first and second batch bats, you can't be 100% sure those are second batch bats in your inventory.

How many and what "Tweaks" can a bat have before it's considered an altered or changed bat?

Feb. 7, 2014
cyborg45

Since this is a changed formula, my concern is the new batch would not be as hot as the first batch. The first batch 2 piece Miken, which I have unfortunately, has taken forever to break in. The newer batch is much hotter out of the wrapper. Sometimes when the tweaking takes place from one batch to another, there can be good and not so good results. I will be interested to see what the players who have hit both batches of Reeboks have to say.

I was not aware of the 1st and 2nd batch of the 2 piece. I didn't like my 1st one (end load) and some time later I bought another (end load) and really like it. Should I buy another, is there a way to tell if I am getting the 1st or 2nd batch model before I take the wrapper off.

Gary, The only way I would guess to know the difference would be in the time frame of purchase. I purchased mine in June of last summer. I would guess that anything purchased later in the year, December or so, would be the new formula, according to posts on this board. If you noticed a difference between your first purchase and the second, then you probably have the new and improved batch. Once Miken gets the process down, they will probably stick with it.

I am getting confused.....

Dave at Senior Softball Bat Reviews in early January was told he would get a money refund for his broken Senior Barrage.

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG9gdZGj1MU

So is Reebok giving money refunds on broken bats or sending 2nd batch bats as replacement bats?

Why would the 26 and 27oz. bats be more prone to break than the 28oz. and up bats?

Kleenex,
Reebok did issue some refunds early on. They changed their policy to giving the purchase amount on Reebok gift cards that you can use in the e store or any Reebok store recently. Reebok does not have any Barrages to replace bats with right now because myself and a couple other people bought everyone they had. They are making more and should be shipping Barrages in about a month. It's the same thing with the Melees, a few people bought all that are here in the US for now and Reebok doesn't have anymore for about 4--6 weeks or more. There was a production mix up on the lighter bats and that was the problem in the first group. It was straightened out when the heavier bats were produced. I was fortunate to get the Barrages and Melees that I have now.

Ok Guys,
You asked for it and here it is. In an effort to help everyone learn about the early failure issue with the 26/27 Barrages I took a 26 out of the 2nd batch box and headed to the field today. Dimensions I believe are 315' at left field line, 345' in left center, and 360' to center. My bat of choice is a 28 so a 26 swings a bit light for me but we commenced to hitting. I put 65 hard swings on the bat using 44/375 balls and found no damage to the bat at all. I examined it under a scope back at the shop and found no fragmental damage along the barrel
so at this point everything looks good. I should mention that with the 1st generation Barrage 26 I was never able to get more than 38 swings on the bat without the carbon collapsing. I will continue to swing it tomorrow. As far as performance goes...I'll stick with my earlier reporting. Probably in the top 2 with the Miken 2 piece for out of the wrapper performance and even though it was a 26 I had no problems exiting the fence at every point in the outfield. Definitely a high performance senior bat. Hope this helps out you guys and I will be at it again tomorrow so stay tuned for more from...

My first Ambush(26oz.EL) had at least 230+ hits on it when a small crack developed. I could have cried, that was one hot bat. Come to think about it I did cry. Went to a 27oz. EL which seems to be the most popular here in S.C. for senior players.

Pete,
My first Ambush had over 800 swings on it. My second Ambush died at 630. I have number 3 and 4 in my bag now. Number 3 has over 500 and number 2 has about 220. Both are fire hot. Generally, I get around 250 from most other senior bats.

Bubble Gum, 27 is the most popular with 26 and 28 running neck and neck depending on the month...

Looks to me as though you bat guys are NOT going to sell a lot of new bats until the 2nd batch versions have some kind markings to indicate 2nd batch. What is the old phrase, Let the Buyer Beware. I am not challenging the integrity of the posters on this topic, but it looks as though you might not know what the facdtory is actually shipping you??????? Hey Gary,
Your idea is one that I recommended to Reebok but....I am unpacking multiple cases today to fill orders to ship. The Barrage is a great bat for those of you who want a bat virtually game ready with just a few swings. Remember, not every 26 or 27 in the first batch broke...just too many that broke too soon so that we knew there was a problem. Luckily, we as senior players have several very good bats to choose from and I'm happy to consult with anyone with questions concerning their needs.

First let me say THANK YOU for all your time on the phone discussing bats.
The Reissued Barrage you sent me is performing OUTSTANDING; at my age (66) it took close to 75 cuts and then it opened right up. It's hitting just as far as my Melee without a mark on it; and you were correct also in the fact that swinging the Barrage compared to an end-load Melee is not much of adjustment.
Again THANKS for your time............Mike

Gentlemen, I'm surfing for a few days more. Reebok is not going to change their systems with regard to batch itemization. There were SOME broken bats. Not that many. They made the adjustments. Very fe of my guys had problems but Reebok made good on them.

Heif, I am selling a lot of new bats because people know they are good bats and if they get a blemished bat, they are made whole for the most part.

I'm one of the guys who bought up Barrage's and Melee's so let me know if I can be of help to you. I return to the mainland on the 21st.

Does Combat, Miken and other bat companies have a way of identifying which batch their bats are made from? Serial numbers or something?

How do Reebok engineers know which batch their bats are made?

Feb. 18, 2014
Tri18
565 posts
There are serial numbers now on most bats from each company . Some companies also put batch numbers on certain models but not all of them. Reebok generally makes smaller batches at a time and ships to the US. A majority of the time they are pre purchased by dealers and shipped out to them once they pass customs. So...batches come in and are gone to dealers very quickly for distribution. So....a majority of the time the batches never co mingle as Reebok doesn't keep stock long.

Your right!

It would be hard to convince me that the Barrage is that much better than the Melee Legend.

I realize the Barrage is 2 piece and the Legend is not.

But is there is any real advantage of the Barrage over the Melee Legend? IF SO, WHAT IS IT?

Went hit with my 28oz. Barrage. I had 47 swings in and I believe this one will take at lease 100 or more to break in well. My hit with his 29oz. Sounded different than and came off the bat a little faster. 47 bps on my 28oz. Is not enough for me to judge. Every thing Dave V. Said about the legit is correct from the 30oz. I've been hitting.

This is what concerns me about a 2nd batch fix. The original Barrage, by many accounts was pretty hot out of the wrapper. It looks to me as if the 2nd batch is not as hot. Sometimes they stay that way. Only time will tell. When Miken tried to improve the durability of the red end load, it was a disaster. No amount of batting practice could fix it. I'll take performance everytime.

I have hit the second group of Barrages a little more. So far, so good. Performance is still very good and we have not noted any major difference in how the bat reacts as compared to the first batch. We haven't experienced any early failures as of yet but I will get a little more into the research next week. The Barrage is not going to win any durability awards for heavy hitters who break bats frequently but it does offer high performance levels very early in life and the only bat that comes close to it in that aspect is Mikens Ultra 2 two piece right now. I'm pulling a 27 from my new stock order and will be working on it next week.

Lefty,
Sorry for the late answer... My team was playing this weekend and I had a booth set up so it was busy! Webbing on the Barrage is not as noticeable as on most senior bats until a bit later on. Usually they break in very quickly although a few have taken 50-75 swings. Of course this is all subject to the player doing the break in. Enjoy the bat, it's certainly a good one!

Took swings this weekend(baseball field 354ft in the power alley). One of my hitting partners, (won't tell you his name but he goes by Dave Sumpter) brings out his brand new, zero swings on it....., 27oz Barrage (2nd run)! Right from the start he's killing it, hits about 5 right at the fence! BIG Smile on his face, lovin the bat.....right at 20 swings, (17 swings I think) he hits a nice shot but the bat sounds different.....why? Because that worthless (in my opinion) is now CRACKED! $200.00 bat for 20 swings = 10 bucks a swing....not worth it to me!!

No webbing, just a couple of nice cracks....maybe he got sent a bad one...it happens!

But, buyers be aware!!

Then again, I was swinging a 28oz Barrage and it held up just fine....But, DAVE is a BEAST!

The legit breats end super fast compared to other senior bats. The 28oz barrage and the legit to me are two great bats. Feels like they are solid bats. I have both the Reebok Melee Balanced and the Reebok Barrage first batch in the 27 ounce versions.

From what I can tell, as far as distance both bats perform pretty much the same, no substantial difference.

As far as feel the Barrage seems to swing slightly heavier. Also the Barrage seems to flex a little bit more.

The durability of the bats at this time would probably be in favor of the Melee over the Barrage first batch. READ THE ABOVE POSTS. Second batch, who knows? I will need to put more hits on each bat to get a more accurate conclusion.

Perhaps Alan has helped create his own problems. Both Alan and MM in prior posts have made it clear what the correct way is to break in a bat. If memory is correct, it involves 75 swings starting at 50% for 25, then 75% for 25 swings, etc. Perhaps is this regimen had been followed, the Barrage would have lasted more than 17 swings, perhaps not, but what is the message?

HJ,

I lean towards the "perhaps not" !

As a heads-up here.....you don't have to accept the "gift card" Reebok will send you for a cracked bat return. Dave called and talked to one of the upper management fellas at Reebok and got a check for the cost of the Barrage.

So, unless you want a new pair of shoes or some nice t-shirts (can't ever have enough of those, can we!) I suggest you make sure you talk to the right guy to get your hard earned money back ! Just a thought, tho.

PJ3P,

you're kidding, right?

all senior softball bats are "game ready" right out of the wrapper!
it's the person or his swing that's not "game ready" !
I can't see why any senior softball player would have to pay or have someone else "break in" his SENIOR bat.....just plan re-dik-uless!

Let me help you guys out on the Barrage bats....26oz, 27oz, piece of crappppp!
28oz holds up and has AWESOME pop (right out of the wrapper, no break in needed)

So, for all you fellas who think 1 or 2oz is that big of a deal when swinging the bat, I suggest you 1. Pump some Iron! 2. Do bat speed drills!! 3. Keep you eye on the ball!!!

MASS (heavier weighted bat) + SPEED (bat speed drills) = a harder and/or further hit ball!! I learned that watching "The Big Bang Theory"!!

I got my Barrage this past Sat. went to try it out on Sunday Beautiful day 70 degrees and sun shining in California. I was hitting 44/375 balls and hitting my other bats first to get warmed up I swing 30oz DeMarini Stadiums that I hit very well. Alan suggested that I purchase a 29oz Barrage said it had more of an end load feel to it than the 30oz. I agree with the feel it does feel a bit more end loaded but possibly the flex of the handle has a bit more to do with it. I hit two balls with it and went to hit a third and I could hear a distinct rattle in the barrel like something inside the bat broke loose a piece of glue from the end cap maybe????

I reported the rattle to Alan and he responded itís usually the case with one that flexes early.

I responded with a question to him about what does flex have to do with a rattle and should I be worried about the durability of the bat?

He replied that is your blessing.

So I was wondering if anyone on this thread has had this happen to their bat and if it is defective is there a way to get it replaced or a refund?

BTW hottest bat I have ever hit was hitting at a Baseball field 325+ fences and cleared the fence with ease several times!

Also I agree with you A dik more mass through the hitting zone with speed equals harder hit balls sorry I didnít learn it from the big bang theory I learned it from watching old clips of Babe Ruth I think he used to hit with a 54oz bat.

Curtiss,
I guess I did not understand in your text to me that you feel something is defective or wrong with the bat. My apologies...small rattles in bats early on usually indicate that the bat is breaking in quickly and at a good performance level. I thought that is what you described in your text to me....hence my response about your blessing. If something isn't right with the bat get with me and I'll see about getting it taken care of.

Big Mike clued me in on his drill couple of years ago, which I use to this day, when I purchased some bats from him. Thought there might be other drills out there.

Adi,

cut and paste the above link into your browser and your questions are answered.

Spoiler alert: use 3 bats, your regular bat, 1 8 ounces heavier and 1 8 ounces lighter- no tee just air swings

To The (?) Question : I use 30oz when swinging any Combat (all thou, I did swing a 28oz White Centarian (sp) in Vegas and I can say that this was (cracked both of the two I had) the HOTTEST Senior bat I've have the pleasure of swinging, so far!! Mikens and Reeboks 29oz works best for me!!

As for the bat speed drills I use:

Yes, the BigCat's drill is awesome.....just a few tweaks here and there (for me)!
I warm up with taking slow swings with a sledge hammer to loosen up, then use Mike's program but use a heavier bat on the heavy swings and a lighter bat for the light swings! After that, and because I have some land I can hit on, I've marked off 300, 320, and 350ft. I have a tee set up and a target to aim for. I then I hit the ball off the tee towards the target keeping the same swing for the same direction every time! I do this to keep my power swing consistent!

Other than that, I just keep my eye on the ball, swing at my pitch in my hitting zone and swing HARD every time!

Hit with my new 28 oz Barrage today at Woodlawn Hitting Club in St Pete Fl. 65 degrees and over cast. Using Evil batting practice balls. First 25 swings were OK had better pop than most bats out of wrapper. Second time took only 15 swings due to rain, but bat stared loosening up. Last 5 swings, hit fence and took one about 320. Will update next week after some more swings.
